Astanga Yoga: A standard viṅyāsa consists (for example) of the flow from caturaṅga, or plank, to caturaṅga daṇḍāsana, or low plank, to ūrdhva mukha śvānāsana or upward-facing dog, to Adho Mukha Svanasana, or downward-facing dog.
The breathing style used in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is Ujjayi which is a relaxed diaphragmatic style of breathing, characterized by an ocean sound which resonates in the practitioner's throat. Viṅyāsa and Ujjayi together create internal heat, which leads to purification of the body through increased circulation and sweating.
Another major principle of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is the bandha, or muscle locking/contraction, which focuses energy in the body and is closely tied to the breath.

Kate McKernan leads two of Congress Hall’s newest Fitness offerings. In Versatile Circuit Training, Kate combines Tabata Protocol (a series of high intensity exercises performed for short intervals, and repeated for several rounds) with basic exercises, from beginner to advanced levels. This training style gives clients the power to make any exercise program work for them (regardless of schedule) instead of working to make time for their program. The result is a high intensity workout with very little rest, which keeps the heart rate at maximum capacity. This means needing less workout time for maximum results (compare a sprinter's body to a long-distance runner's body). Learn how to use your own body as a gym. Ideal for the busy vacationer who may not have time to get a workout in at a gym, yet desires more than a quick walk or jog. (Mats/bands/towels provided by instructor; $20 per class) Sign up for our next class by calling our Front Desk at (609) 884-8421.
For Personal Training Sessions, Kate will introduce and help you to document a workout routine for your specific body type, based on your desired results. Together, you will assess body fat % and calculate lean muscle to body fat ratio. Kate will present nutritional information for you to take home and utilize in your everyday life. Kate also teaches client breathing, posture, and stance techniques to enhance workout and strengthen core. Sessions will include synergistic exercise (multiple muscle movement), resulting in higher caloric utilization and extreme core conditioning. (Fee: $75 for an individual session; $50 per person for groups of 2 or more) Sign up for a session by calling our Front Desk at (609) 884-8421.
